NAW2025 – Apprentice Wednesday

National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time for us to reflect on our apprentices and their progress, so we caught up with them to find out how they’re doing.

Will Barnes
Apprentice (Countryside Worker Level 2)
What are you hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?
I am hoping to carry on with the same company to further develop my knowledge and skills about my current working environment and grant me more possibilities and opportunities in the future.
What have you learnt so far?
I have learnt to work in a professional environment and how to work as an effective team with my co-workers. I’ve also learnt how to communicate with our clients and members of the public about my profession.
What has been your favourite part of the apprenticeship so far?
My favourite part so far are all the new experiences I’ve had, as well as all the knowledge and skills I’ve learnt through the help of my colleagues.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start an apprenticeship?
My advice for anyone looking to join is to choose one that you know you will enjoy and will benefit you most for the future. Also, always ask questions and don’t be scared to ask for help.

Charlie Dutton
Apprentice (Countryside Worker Level 2)
What are hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?
To have a future with the company, and, if not, learn and gain experience.
What have you learnt so far?
What have I not learnt! How to use a chainsaw and how to drive towing trailers. I’ve learnt loads about fencing, for example how to tension and how to put fencing together. Working with the more experienced guys, who have been in this industry for years, is invaluable, as they pass on so much knowledge.
What have been your favourite parts of the apprenticeship so far?
Learning new things and different techniques that you wouldn’t learn elsewhere. This learning on the ground backed up with time spent at college. It’s great that I can bring experience from work to college and vice versa. For example working with Jon using the post knocker has allowed me to be more confident in using the post knocker at college.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start an apprenticeship?
Be prepared for early mornings and to work hard! Don’t take others for granted, pull your weight in a team, get stuck in!

Cameron Kirkby
Apprentice (Countryside Worker Level 2)
What are you hoping to get out of your apprenticeship?
I’m hoping to get experience in the industry and learn new things along with my qualification.
What have you learnt so far?
I’ve learned many things so far, some simple, for example, don’t strim near stones, near windows! Some a bit more complex like how to change the fuel filter on a chipper.
What have been your favourite parts of the apprenticeship so far?
My favourite part so far has been meeting and getting to know my awesome colleagues along with the landscaping/maintenance section of the company.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start an apprenticeship?
My advice to anyone wanting to embark on an apprenticeship is to listen, something very simple but very effective as it has made me better at my job.
